In our second test serie we look at the Ferrite core N87, B64290L0699X087 from Epcos.

Product link is Here

We test with the evaluation board 7 transistors. Test is conducted in self oscillation and signal driven from a signal generator.

We integrate our measurements into the formula

Core, Ferrite N87, 6m SWG26 and 2 X 1.2m 16/02 EQ wire
Reference power value 400 mV and 0.030 A = 0.012 Watt
Load: 5 LEDs in series, 3 Volt 20 mA = 15 Volt and 100 mA = 1.5 Watt

First Summary

The Ferrite core does resonant much longer after each trigger which
allows for more power to be transferred to the load. This is visible by the
much higher self-oscillation mode. We have a clear winner of this test.

The 2SD882.

Not only is this transistor the cheapest of them all, it performs also best.
We move on to the signal generator driven test via square wave.
We adjust for the highest brightness and then look at the current draw and
the frequency.

Conclusion

Under frequency driven High Z from a signal generator with the ferrite Core we
have a much better performance as with the NanoPerm core. Here most of the
transistors perform equal but overall, all do much better than in the previous test.
The ringing is the effect of a much lower permeability of the core material creating
a higher energy output to the load. We move on to the Metglas / Nanocrystal
core. From previous tests I can say that this core does absorb all vibrations.
this did lead to a very low frequency response. We will see.
