The 2975 GDT series from Bourns is manufactured as spark gap technology for medium duty of ignition systems for oil heating or gas hob. It is also used for igniting xenon lamps. Here a long term use is also not considered and clear guideline of repetitions of firing to current is provided in the data sheet.

I introduce the GDT 2975 family and demonstrate its function as Spark Gap replacement for a Tesla coil as well as the performance and option to use.

Summary
The GDT 2975 SERIES is a precision voltage breakdown device for controlled
voltage breakdown. There main usage is in ignition systems and in Xenon lamp
start-up ignition. They are not used continuously for such use and vary with rating
from 1 time spark per minute to 400 times per minute based on current. In our little
Tesla coil arrangement the 40 nF is not producing more than 4 Watt at 200 KV. It
stores 0.08 Joules per second. That is at 50 Hz 4 Watt only. Frequency is 50 Hz.
Secondary ripple is 350 KHz. The complete power supply is consuming 10 Watt only.
It is also simple to daisy chain the GDTs with the same calculated result for power
consumption and voltage output. In the next step I will have to rectify that and also
to see if I can get it into a small compact system. I also will lower the breakdown
voltage to 1000 Volt to keep it manageable around 150 KV reducing the current
requirement even further.
