We are looking in this video series on a way to replace the open spark gap in Tesla Coil; designs. The open spark gap is prone to a fire hazard and inconsistent performance where parameters change during duty rendering performance unreliable. The Thyristor a s switch device seems a perfect fit, however it is not so simple to implement and also has a high cost involved. That might be the reason you do not see this technolgies out in the field.

Summary
The Thyristor or SCR (Silicon Controlled Rectifiers) is a crowbar devise which allows to
switch high power systems on. They are used in Power relay stations where Megawatts
of power are switched on or off. The downside is that they stay switch on or latched up as
along as a minimum current is available. Double SCR or TRIACs can switch AC and
are automatically switched off each side when the wave form changes from positive
to negative or vice versa. Latching does not occur there. The tricky part is how to switch
elegant. As demonstrated the gate and anode is present on both sides of the chip and
regulates the flow for each direction independent. A signal generator, as tested, does
favour always one side and is keeping the return flow open. Two separate signals need
to be applied isolated from each other but synchronised to each other. As alternative a
mechanical device can be used just to short both gates. In the next stage I will get more
TRIACs and other devices to optimise the switching of the Bipolar Tesla Coil from a
Neon Sign transformer
